Explain that even at the speed of light, a radio signal takes 8 minutes to travel from Mars to Earth and another 8 minutes to get back to Mars. In that time a robot on the surface of Mars could have crashed into a rock. To get around this problem, robots are programmed to act autonomously, to respond to their environment without direct human control. |
